Investigation of student learning is becoming more common on campuses as part of a body of work known as the Scholarship of Teaching and Learning (SoTL). Links in this section provide an introduction to SoTL through articles, annotated websites, and an online multimedia tutorial with photos, graphics, and video clips.

Why the Scholarship of Teaching and Learning Matters Today (PDF)

The first chapter of the 2011 book, The Scholarship of Teaching and Learning Reconsidered, offers a excellent overview and history of this emerging and growing field of inquiry. In addition, the chapter explores the relationship of SoTL to teaching and learning, faculty development, assessment, and evaluation of teaching. 

Investigating Student Learning Grant (ISL)

Open to faculty who wish to investigate aspects of student learning in their courses or programs. Grant awards of $3,000 are available to individual faculty members. Grant awards of $4,000 are available to faculty member-graduate student/postdoc teams. Proposal deadline: 4:00 p.m. on Tuesday, January 22, 2013. Student Learning and Analytics at Michigan (SLAM)

Part of the Provost's Third Century Initiatiave, SLAM brings together U-M faculty interested in gathering and using data to improve student learning. Each year, SLAM sponsors a series of talks by both U-M and external speakers. The website lists the current schedule as well as resources from previous presentations. It also links to a wiki with further information about learning analytics.

International Society for the Scholarship of Teaching and Learning (ISSOTL)

ISSOTL is the major professional association for faculty engaged in the Scholarship of Teaching and Learning. They sponsor an annual conference as well as a journal.

Journal of Scholarship of Teaching and Learning

Founded in 2001, the Journal of the Scholarship of Teaching and Learning (JoSoTL) is a peer reviewed Journal for the dissemination of the Scholarship of Teaching and Learning in higher education for the community of teacher-scholars.

The Scholarship of Teaching and Learning: What's the Problem? (Randy Bass, 1998)

Asking a colleague about a problem in his or her research is an invitation; asking about a problem in one’s teaching would probably seem like an accusation. Changing the status of the problem in teaching from terminal remediation to ongoing investigation is precisely what the movement for a scholarship of teaching is all about.
