Fostering Empathy in Engineering Students and Classrooms

Session Format: In-Person

Intended Audience: All

Facilitator: Linjue (Jade) Wang

Session Abstract: The new "People-first Engineering" framework at the College of Engineering aims to introduce equity-centered values & broader social contexts more explicitly in engineering classrooms. One way to do this is to focus on fostering empathy for, and in, students as they learn engineering knowledge and skills. In this interactive workshop, participants will investigate the role of empathy in engineering and acquire transferable strategies for teaching empathy to their students. This in-person workshop will be especially helpful for instructors interested in making empathy part of their learning objectives.
