Getting Started on Your Teaching Philosophy Statement

Session Format: Remote asynchronous (Canvas)

Intended Audience: Graduate students, Postdocs

Facilitator(s): Sarah Zelner

Session Abstract: Many academic employers require a teaching philosophy statement as part of the application process. In this asynchronous 2-week workshop, you will learn about research on hiring committees’ use of teaching philosophy statements, examine sample philosophies, and work through activities designed to help you begin the process of writing a teaching philosophy statement. A few things to note. First, this workshop incorporates peer feedback as an important element. This means there will be two intermediate deadlines throughout the workshop (on Tuesday 3/12 and Tuesday 3/19). Second, this is an introductory workshop to help launch you on the process of writing a teaching statement. Drafting a full statement is not the intended outcome of the workshop. However, if you have already drafted a statement, you are welcome to use this workshop as an opportunity to further refine your statement.
