Session Abstract: In this interactive synchronous session we investigate the function of difference in equity-focused teaching. Social systems of power (racism, sexism, ableism, etc.) produce inequity in part by shaping the meanings and value of differences between and among human beings, in order to maintain unequal distributions of resources, access, wealth, and well-being. This workshop first reviews some theoretical foundations for Critical Engagement of Difference, inviting participants to reflect together on the role of difference in higher education classrooms. We’ll then guide participants to develop context-specific strategies for critically engaging difference in your own teaching practice.

Note: This workshop is intended for those who are already familiar with CRLT’s Equity-focused Teaching (EfT) framework from a recent CRLT workshop or consultation (within the past year or so). If the EfT framework is new to you, we recommend you register for “Introduction to Equity-focused Teaching” or request a consultation instead.
